چکیده

Parasitic diseases generally present a major health problem especially in developing countries. However, the human urogenitial tract is commonly infested by a few species of parasites. One of them is schistosoma haematobium, not found in Pakistan is a digenetic blood fluke causing severe and varied urinary tract pathology. Evaluation of such pathology warrants careful history taking, eliciting patient’s geographic origin or his exposure in an area endemic for a particular parasite.

Validation of a New Test for Schistosoma haematobium Based on Detection of Dra1 DNA Fragments in Urine: Evaluation through Latent Class Analysis

BACKGROUND Diagnosis of urogenital schistosomiasis in chronically infected adults is challenging but important, especially because long term infection of the bladder and urinary tract can have dire consequences. We evaluated three tests for viable infection: detection of parasite specific DNA Dra1 fragments, haematuria and presence of parasite eggs for sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp). M...

Schistosomiasis among Travelers: New Aspects of an Old Disease

Schistosomiasis is increasingly encountered among travelers returning from the tropics; signs and symptoms of travelers may differ from those of local populations. During 1993-2005, schistosomiasis was diagnosed in 137 Israeli travelers, most of whom were infected while in sub-Saharan Africa. Clinical findings compatible with acute schistosomiasis were recorded for 75 (66.4%) patients and inclu...

Control of Schistosoma haematobium morbidity on Pemba Island: validity and efficiency of indirect screening tests.

Four indirect screening methods for the detection of Schistosoma haematobium morbidity are compared (history of haematuria, visual haematuria, and microhaematuria at the 1+ and 2+ positivity limit by reagent strips) in terms of their diagnostic performance under conditions of progressive decrease in prevalence of infection, intensity and risk of morbidity as a result of repeated schistosomiasis...

Therapeutic failure of praziquantel in the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium infection in Brazilians returning from Africa.

Several cases of therapeutic failure of praziquantel used for the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis have been reported. Alternative drugs, like niridazol and metrifonate, have shown a lower therapeutic effect and more side effects than praziquantel. Twenty-six Brazilian military men (median age of 29 years) with a positive urine parasitological exam who were part of a United Nation peace mis...
